At our nurseries, we’re always on the lookout for exciting ways to engage and stimulate our little ones. Last week, we made the most of the sunshine and ventured outdoors to indulge in a array of sensory experiences, from delightful baby sensory walks to enchanting ice cube water trays. Here’s a glimpse into some of our favourite baby sensory activities that were enjoyed across our nursery schools.
Soft Ducklings: A Touch of Sensory Wonder
In March, the Maldon Day Nursery had the incredible opportunity to witness the hatching of ducklings, immersing the children in a sensory-rich experience. This hands-on encounter with nature not only deepened their interest in animals but also nurtured a sense of responsibility and care. From eagerly guessing what would hatch from the eggs to delighting in the sight of the ducklings taking their first swim. Each week the children get to enjoy sensory stimulation, from the soft downy feathers to the gentle sounds of chirping. This invaluable experience left a lasting impression for both the children and the team.
Water Tray Ideas for Early Years
In our orange water tray, babies embarked on a sensory safari, washing and playing with toy animals amidst glittering water and juicy orange pieces. This vibrant sensory experience encouraged exploration of textures, smells, and sounds, while role-playing and mimicking animal noises honed communication skills and sparked imagination.
Our young explorers had an exhilarating time discovering the wonders of ice and water. What made this activity truly memorable? Our preschool companions joined in, guiding and interacting with our little ones, resulting in moments brimming with laughter and joy.
Benefits: These interactions not only promote social development but also enhance sensory experiences, enriching their overall learning journey.
Sensory Parachute Play
The babies joined in with parachute play alongside their friends. They delighted in seeing colourful shapes form above them, felt the breeze on their faces, and heard the whoosh of the parachute material. This activity not only provided sensory stimulation but also promoted physical development and coordination.
Metallic Baby Sensory Exploration
Mirrored objects and metallic sensations took centre stage as our babies engaged in a captivating journey of self-discovery. Through song, play, and social interactions, they explored their reflections, mimicked facial expressions, and forged meaningful connections with key workers.
Tips for Sensory Activities at Home
Encouraging your child’s development can start with regular tummy time sessions. Whether on a gym mat, with support cushions, or in front of mirrors, these sessions help babies lift their heads and explore their surroundings.
Additionally, consider the often-overlooked vestibular sense, which plays a crucial role in overall sensory development. Located in the mid-region of the brain and centered in the inner ear, it aids in maintaining balance and spatial awareness.
Here are some engaging activities to promote sensory development and stimulate the vestibular sense:
- Using a baby swing at the park
- Sliding your child on a blanket across laminated flooring
- Gentle spinning
- Dancing together
- Engaging in action rhymes
Incorporating these activities into your child’s routine fosters a strong foundation for both physical and sensory development.
